BKS IyengarB.K.S. Iyengar or Guruji as we call him has a wonderful life story of humble beginnings and triumphant endings.

People all over the world now view him as a Master of Yoga. I refer to him as a genius for his astounding achievement in the practice of yoga, his commitment to teaching yoga to men, women and children all over the world and his knowledge and ability and work in his medical classes.

With his scientific mind and his intuitive and discerning approach he has healed many people and improved the quality of life for so many more whose health and condition could not be helped by modern medicine.

Documentation and photos of his work in the medical classes in Pune can be seen in his latest publication “BKS Iyengar Archive Project 2007 available in Iyengar Yoga Association bookshops around the world.

B.K.S. Iyengar has been an inspiration to people living in the west since the mid 1950’s when he began his visits. His stories about these early days are well published and make very interesting and inspiring reading and portray a man determined to get his message of Yoga and what it offers for body mind and health as far as he could throughout the world.

His book Light on Yoga published in 1966 has become the handbook to those studying yoga today. This was followed by Light on the Yoga Sutres, which is his translation of the Yoga Sutres of Patanjali written in text a few thousand years ago. Again, this book is highly regarded in the Yoga communities around the world.

In 2005 Light on Life was published which should be read by everyone. This book is an authoritive though easy to read book about the pathway to Yoga as a practice and lifestyle. It is the culmination of Guruji’s life work and experience.

This year is Guruji’s 90th birthday, he continues to inspire us and teach us from his Institute in Pune, the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute, named after his late wife Ramamani who was Mother of his five children and loving wife to B.K.S. Iyengar.
